How does solar energy work?

Solar panels on your roof absorb daylight and convert it into electricity, you may have thought it needs to be sunny for solar panels to work. However, as they are absorbing daylight and not sun they will work on cloudy days too. The power that is generated is then used to run appliances and lighting in your home and you will get paid for every unit of this energy you use. You can also make money from the energy you don’t use; if you’re out for the day and not using any appliances in your home then your electricity is sold back to the National Grid.

How much can I save with solar panels?

It is estimated that on average you can expect to save approxiamtely £800 a year. Here is an example for you; lets consider a family of four in a three-bed property who buy a 4kWh solar panel system. They will earn about £560 a year from their supplier just for generating the solar electricity. On top of this, they will then make £90 from selling power back to the National Grid via their energy supplier. And it doesnt stop there, they would typically reduce their electricity bill by £150 from using their own power instead of buying it all from their supplier.
